Several researches have shown that fuel consumption by heavy traffic is higher on flexible than on concrete pavements, due to the energy absorbed by the surface deflection. A series of four studies by the National Research Council of Canada have resulted in statistically significant differences between 1,3 and 3,9 % (trailers - full and empty - 60 km/hr - all seasons). CO2 and other harmful emissions are also reduced.
Other cement and concrete's credentials concern:
Durability and longevity, constituting a cost-effective and environmental advantage;
Safe and comfortable surfaces;
Techniques of soil treatment and land remediation;
Recyclability of concrete;
Use of low energy cements;
Reduced lighting costs and urban heat island effect;
No danger of leaching.
