TREMTI 2009

The 3rd International Symposium on Treatment and Retreatment of Materials for Transport Infrastructure hosted 175 participants of 18 countries. 35 papers from 14 countries were submitted.
It was held in Antigua (Guatemala) from 11 to 13 November 2009.

The Symposium was organized by the Institute of Cement and Concrete of Guatemala (ICCG) with the support of the Interamerican Federation of Cement (FICEM-APCAC), the World Road Association (PIARC) and the lime industry of Guatemala.

This edition of the Symposium can be considered as a bridge between Europe and Latin America, since near 50% of papers came from this area. On the contrary, in the two previous editions this proportion was much smaller.  This shows that there is a growing interest in soil stabilisation and pavement recycling which is not restricted to Europe and USA, two classical references on these techniques.

This is not surprising if their technical, economical and environmental advantages are considered. They were highlighted along the sessions of the Symposium, which were devoted to the following topics:

Materials and laboratory studies;

Soil stabilisation;

Soil-cement;

Pavement recycling.

Some of the topics which were dealt with in the papers are included in the following list:

Comparative performance of different qualities of lime and cement in the treatment of soils;

The European standard on hydraulic road binders;

Slaking of hydraulic road binders with a high quicklime content;

Mechanical behaviour of mixes of sandy soil with rice husk ash and lime;

Physical and mechanical characterization of sedimentary and residual soils stabilized with quicklime;

Feasibility of soil stabilization in oil sites;

Reassessment of problems affecting stabilized layers;

Influence of methods of compaction of specimens in the properties of soils stabilized in situ;

A graphic method for environmental and economic comparison between treated soils and unbound granular materials;

Fatigue tests on lime stabilized soils;

Stabilized capping layers for highways and motorways;

Combined treatments with lime and hydraulic road binder;

Swell behaviour of lime and cement stabilised cohesive soils;

Experiences in the construction of semirigid pavements and considerations on their surface evenness;

High performance soil-cement pavements for low-volume roads;

Design and production of controlled low strength materials for the filling of sink holes;

Specifications and quality control recommendations of soil-cement mixtures;

Soil-cement layers with waste and demolition recycled materials

The manufacture of metakaolin and its road applications;

Technologies for thin-layer maintenance;

Recycled materials with minimum shrinkage using blended portland cements;

Use of cold recycling for the rehabilitation and maintenance of main highways and motorways;

Use of subgrade stabilization, soil-cement and pavement recycling for widening and rehabilitation of existing highways

In addition, three special lectures were given on the following topics:

Soil stabilization with cement or lime: the IECA - ANTER - Ancade handbook;

How to organize effectively a stabilization work;

French practices on in situ recycling of pavements using cement.

In spite of the budgetary restrictions bound to the world economic crisis, this third edition of TREMTI reached the aimed objectives:

A good mobilization of experts, especially from Latin America;

A collective awareness tied to the consideration of the environment: a will to save and preserve the natural resources, keeping in mind the principles of Sustainable Development expressed by all the participants and all represented countries;

A scientific and technical content underlining and confirming the technical advances and the technological progress accomplished since the previous Symposium TREMTI 2005 in Paris.

TREMTI 2009 took place in a difficult international context, in full economic crisis. But, thanks to the organization, the good atmosphere and the hospitality of the Guatemalan hosts, as well as  the technical exchanges between countries, it can be considered a success.

All of you are kindly invited to the 4th edition of TREMTI in 2013.

Carlos Jofre (IECA) - Joseph Abdo (CIMbéton).
