Live crash-demo at the Nürburgring

Around 150 participants were gathered on 25 September 2013 on the Formula 1 track of the Nürburgring in Germany for an exciting event on safety barriers.

The “Verkehrsforum West” was organised by Betonmarketing West, a division of EUPAVE member Betonmarketing Deutschland GmbH and the Gütegemeinschaft which is the trade association for concrete safety barriers and Slipformpaving.  The audience was welcomed by their respective presidents Prof. dr. eng. Matthias Middel and eng. Andreas Tieman.

EUPAVE was supporting this event and Managing Director Luc Rens addressed an opening word presenting EUPAVE and its activities and highlighting the importance of this topic for our association.  Among the participants were other interested EUPAVE members from Wirtgen and Wim Kramer from the Dutch Cement and Concrete Centre, in company of a dozen of professionals from the Netherlands.

The  presentations dealt with the German technical documents related to the materials and installation of vehicle restraint systems, with the influence of the subgrade on systems with posts and with the variety of slipformed concrete elements.

Yet the most thrilling part was undoubtedly the live demonstration by stuntman Klaus Förster who showed three collisions under angles of 8, 11 and 15° with a precast concrete Stepbarrier.  The ones looking for sensation must have been disappointed.  Mr. Förster drove a normal family car without any special protective clothes or equipment and he explained and showed in a very professional way what can happen in case of loss of control of by a car driver.

The successful event was coordinated and moderated by eng. Peter Schermuly from Betonmarketing West.
