EUPAVE Webinar highlights Joint Optimisation and Measurement Technologies in Concrete Pavements

06/03/2026

On 5 March 2026, EUPAVE organised a webinar on dowels and tie-bars in concrete pavements, focusing on joint optimisation and non-destructive measurement technologies. The online event gathered around 70 participants from across the concrete paving community and generated many questions during the discussion.

The webinar was opened by Luc Rens, who briefly looked back at EUPAVE’s previous activities on dowels and tie-bars.

The main presentation was delivered by Matthias Herold from MIT Mess- und Prüftechnik GmbH, who presented innovative approaches to optimising joint cutting positions in concrete roads using non-destructive measurement technologies.

Based on the analysis of more than 10,000 measurements of dowel bar positions, the presentation highlighted common installation issues such as lateral displacement, incorrect depth, and misalignment, which can affect the performance of concrete pavements. A new device was also presented, designed to detect the exact position of dowels before the joint is cut and help improve construction accuracy.

The webinar concluded with an interactive Q&A session.
